(Re)Theming Solutions

As FileMaker Inc adds new features and functionality to FileMaker, it’s really easy for older projects to start to feel like they’re aging pretty quickly. Fortunately, one of the easiest fixes to make is to give things a brand new look and feel.

The process, however, of going about a re-theming isn’t always as easy as it seems. You’ve got new layout objects which may have been added and there are a ton of “older tricks” which may be replaced with newer ways of doing things.

Without going down the rabbit hole of a complete do-over, you can start re-theming with a good starter theme.

In this video, I showcase how I tackle the project of starting a new project or re-theming and existing solution. It’s a process which can put new life into an older project. You just need to have a good place to start and a way to approach the process. That’s what this particular video is all about. Taking full advantage of FileMaker’s Theming tools!

Hey Matt,

This is one of your best Articles ever.

Well thought out approach to modifying Themes (Classic, Minimalist etc,) and a better approach to creating new solutions.

Instead of opening up your file, I choose to make my own by following your steps in the video. This was a good exercise for me, and it cleared up some things that were causing me problems in the past, such as the Save, Save, Save

Matt, I am trying to develop a naming convention but it seems that alpha order does not affect how these different object styles are listed. Is there any way to effect the sort order? to be very clear, I mean when you right click an object and go to the object style menu, they seem to b in no particular order.

This was a great video and a great resource. I should really watch the videos all the way through before jumping in, though...will save time in the long run.

:-)

Thanks again!

Cheers,

-D.H.

This Video was brilliant. I am in the process of theming my own and Client databases.
It is going to be interesting 2 months as I Re-theme and Update the databases.

Thank You.
