Custom Function Database 17 - Adding a Search Bar

Making it easy for users to search for content is what your job is all about. If you're relying on FileMaker's default Query By Form method of searching, then many users may not know how to use the full functionality of FileMaker's search.

This is where you, as the developer, get to control how users interact with the data. By taking advantage of both FileMaker's QuickFind and the normal Query By Form, you can implement really nice features like an easy-to-use search bar.

In this video, we walk through the process of adding just such a search bar into the Custom Function database. If you're interested in learn about how you can take full control over the searching process then this video will provide you with a lot of insight!

This tutorial met a need for a current project on which I working and allowed me to implement Quickfind in a much more elegant manner than I would have otherwise. This segment alone was worth the cost of a year's subscription. Thanks!

I'm a new paid subscriber and am looking forward to making use of the site's many resources. My first project is to adapt the tagging system in your functions database to a CRM I've developed for our company. I was able to migrate the tagging popover and associated scripts and tables, and it's mostly working great. A few questions, though:

1) When adding a new tag, if I hit return rather than the checkmark (something users are likely to do) the tag is added but the plus icon is now selected and highlighted. This doesn't happen in the original functions database. It's a purely cosmetic problem, but I'd love to fix it. Am I missing something obvious?

2) The filter functionality is proving a bit more difficult to migrate. I've got it so that it displays all of the available tags, but they're all gray -- the tags in use aren't being formatted in blue. Again, is this an obvious mistake?

3) Finally, can you offer any suggestions on how I might approach applying a tag to multiple records? Often our user will want to use a search to pull up a group of records ("ad agencies in Boulder that haven't been called in six months," etc.) and then tag those records for future use.

Many thanks!

The solutions created during this learning series have stop working, and no longer retrieve the Custom Functions from Brian Dunning's site.

FYI, the Clip Manager button on the page at briandunning.com (under the code) no longer appear. I contacted myFMbutler and Jasper stated "We took a look at the website of Brian Dunning today and we also saw that there are some issues with JavaScript. They were probably introduced after the big update of his website.
We’re going to contact Brian to see if we can find a solution so our customers can keep using his website."

If there is something I missed, please let me know
