Hidden Utility Windows

If you haven't used them before, then it's probably time you should check them out. What I'm talking about are Hidden Utility Windows or the more commonly referred to "Off-screen Windows".

This has been a common developer trick in many software solutions. FileMaker is no stranger to this process. The know-how behind this trick, however, may be more simple than you think - or could be more simple than you're used to.

By creating some generalized routines, we can optimize the process of creating and using off-screen windows for the purpose of state-saving scripting. This video will present all the information you need in order to get a handle on using these useful tools!

Hi Matt

I have been using the hidden window technique for quite a while, but noticed on Windows two major issues:

1. If a windows is positioned off the visible screen, FileMaker will expand the master (programm window). That will lead to these ugly scrolling bars in the master window.

2. FileMaker on Windows is much slower drawing a new window, even when the new window is off-screen. Having complex scripts which open a couple new windows off screen to do some work, FileMaker will take about twice as long as staying in the original window.

Have you come across a solution for this?

Cheers

Hi Matt,

I'm running FileMaker Developer 11 and the Adjust Window step no longer seems to work i.e. the window is not hidden.

I've tried a number of ways to figure this out including telling it to specifically select the window by the $window name beforehand but it simply refuses to work and it's rather driving me nuts (esp. because it seems like it should work!)

Any advice?

Kind Regards,

Peter
