FileMaker 9 Arrives!Posted by: Editor / Tuesday, July 10, 2007 – 4:00pm
Guess what! FileMaker, Inc. updated their website today. Typically, this wouldn’t be any big deal. However, today, it has nice new graphic which might be of interest to you. Yep, that’s FileMaker 9 you see there on the front page. Get ready, because there’s a lot of new features coming your way. If you’re looking for the quick overview of new features (not the detailed info) then clicking the link will give you a PDF provided by FileMaker. There’s also likely to be a storm of tips and tricks about the new version, as beta testers (no, I wasn’t one of them for some reason) rush to be the first to get out their goods. One person in particular, who has great techincal chops, is Geoff Coffey. He’s got a new website with a few FileMaker 9 tips. If you know of other places where FileMaker 9 tips are being posted then post comments! More info to come… Filed under: news | Free Access

Filemaker 9 Activation Policy
I have found too late the activation policy with my Filemaker Pro 9 Advanced. A typical installation when developing a database is a copy in the desktop computer, another one in the portable and a final in the other OS for testing screen display, all of them for one sole user. Apparently, this scheme now requires three full licenses as Filemaker Customer Service details:
Thank you for contacting FileMaker Customer Assistance.
FileMaker only allows 2 two activations per individual license key. The first activation is a general license activation which allows you to install and use only one copy of the Software on a single computer at a time. The second activation is a backup, portable and home right license which allows you to make one copy of the Software in machine readable form solely for backup purposes.
In regards to running the Software on a Parallels virtual machine running Vista. Per our license agreement, you may not use or run more than one instance of the Software from the same operating system (e.g., using virtualization or other technologies) at the same time. Please refer to your FileMaker Software License or view a sample license here - http://filemaker.com/company/legal/license/fmp/fmp.html
If you wish to obtain an additional license on top of your current setup, you will need to purchase a new full license for FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced.
Or you may transfer an existing Activation from one computer to a new computer, by selecting “Deactivate” under the Help menu, or by contacting Customer Assistance at: 800-325-2747.
If you have any additional questions, please contact Customer Assistance at: 800-325-2747, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. PT (holidays excluded).

And this activation policy is the most strict in the Software Industry (apart those requiring a dongle) in a program that clearly requires certain flexibility for a developer. The upgrade to Advanced is 299 euro (US$ 411 versus US$ 299 in the US) and a new license is 499 euro (US$ 688 versus US$ 499).
As consumers, we can only change this with our wallet and my company is not going to upgrade the Filemaker 8.5 licenses to 9. Also, we will explore new solutions that can help us maintain a controlled expense and not feed the greedy.
Best wishes,
Paco
