FileMaker Calculations Explored Has Moved!I’m very excited to announce that this information has moved to my new web site!
This new site has some great search features and is much easier to manage content. I hope you like it! So please (click here) to visit the new home for FileMaker Calculations Explored! From Digital Nomad to Digital RefugeeI'm writing this blog post from a Starbucks just outside of Richmond at around 8pm on Tuesday, August 30th. In 15 minutes or so, my home will have been without power for 80 hours. That's not a typo. 80 hours. Our community was hit hard by Irene on Saturday, and large parts of the area are still struggling to get back to normal.
I normally consider myself to be something of a digital nomad. I'm
September MeetingI hope your summer is going well. September is around the corner and that means that we will once again meet monthly for our Northwest Ohio FileMaker Pro Users Group (NWFMPUG). Our next meeting is in two weeks on Tuesday, September 6, 5-7pm at the Wingate Hotel in Sylvania. Agenda: Our main presenter will be Gordon Shewach of Desktop Services in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Gordon has worked as an independent FileMaker consultant for 17 years and has been involved in a vast array of projects. Gordon is also a regular member of our FileMaker user group. ——————————————————————— While custom database development is just that — custom, there are certain elements that are common to most of my databases, including: • a single record table to maintain settings and preferences I’ll demonstrate these techniques and bring a sample database for distribution that includes these techniques. ——————————————————————— Please register early so we know how many people plan to attend. Also, you may recall that the Wingate hotel fee is $85/meeting. Therefore a free will offering is welcome, though not required. Finally, help spread the word about our user group. Certainly let other FileMaker users know about the group. FileMaker may also be a great discovery for people storing data in spreadsheets or word processing documents or even people using enterprise systems who need something for smaller projects and/or reporting. Upcoming Meetings (always the first Tuesday of the month, from 5-7pm, currently at the Wingate Hotel): Mark your calendars! Aug 22 – DevCon Wrap UpJoin us as we discuss the highlights of the 2011 DevCon in SanDiego. Seattle was well represented, so if you didn’t make it to the show you’ll likely learn a lot from those who did. If you did go, come share your thoughts, what you learned, and your feelings about the future of FileMaker. RSVP here. Pizza etc. if you RSVP, the off to Paddy Coyne’s for beers and a bite after. New SpaceFor the last 5+ years, the FileMaker group in Portland has been meeting at MacForce. Sadly, they closed their doors on July 31, so now we’re moving to a new space for meetings. 800 NE Oregon, Room 1E. Portland OR 97232 Also, we’re moving to a new meeting time, during the day. We will meet from 3pm to 5pm. This will hopefully make it easier for people with families to come to the meeting, though I know it will make it more difficult for others. July Subject-of-the-month: Layout DesignOur next meeting is Tuesday, July 26th at the usual time and place. Byron Songer and Jonathan Fletcher will be talking about the lessons they learned from a FileMaker layout design webinar they participated in this month. The webinar included 10 hours of tips, tricks and user interface design goodness. Jonathan and Bryon registered for the seminar simultaneously, each ignorant of the other’s interest. So, you get two completely different points of view on what was useful and important in this really intensive workshop. As usual, you may also bring your questions, problems, solutions and just about any FileMaker related subject you want to discuss. We’ll be there. Come join us for good, clean techy fun. Schedule: DATE: LOCATION: Map: here Info & RSVP: here July 25 – Court Bowman on CCPivotCourt Bowman from FileMaker Platinum firm Cleveland Consulting will be here to talk about CCPivot, their latest tool for FileMaker reporting. This meeting will be what we make it, so please bring your FileMaker Challenge to share with the group and we will work to resolve it. Feel free to bring your FileMaker Successes as well to share how you addressed a challenging development issue. Typically, attendance at our meetings during the summer months is pretty low, so I would really appreciate your RSVP on this meeting. Looking forward to seeing you there! Audrey ❦ FileMaker Development: The Pros and ConsI enjoy doing FileMaker development so much so much that there are some mornings where I literally jump out of bed ready to get started. The problem is that this sometimes happens a little too early - like at 4:00 AM!
June 20 – FileMaker Go Offline: GoZyncTodd Geist of Geist Interactive and John Sindelar of SeedCode discuss their new “sync” framework for FileMaker Go: GoZync.
